Stay by Scottish artist Alice Boyle explores the bittersweet feeling of children leaving home. While some parents welcome the freedom, others struggle with letting go and simply want them to stay. It also reflects on the special intimacy of having family or friends stay overnight, rather than simply visiting for the day. The painting is created by building up layers of plaster and carving into the final surface, usually with the end of a paintbrush before it dries. Acrylic paint is then layered over the textured surface, allowing the image to gradually emerge.
