Cats often feature in Boyle’s artworks as they are one of the main things that bring her back into the present moment. “I feel completely at peace when I’m stroking a cat.” This figure, half cat and half man, appears to be searching for a quiet space to relax and return to stillness — perhaps reflecting Boyle’s own longing for calm amongst the chaos of family life.
The painting is created by building up layers of plaster and carving into the final surface, usually with the end of a paintbrush before it dries. Acrylic paint is then layered over the textured surface, allowing the image to gradually emerge.
