Practice

Boyle’s work has evolved alongside her emotional journey, since she became a full time artist in 2010.  Art is Boyle’s powerful and expressive tool which enables her to process diverse experiences and gain wisdom. For instance, after her mother died in 2019 she intuitively chose to work, smaller scale; use more neutral colours and re-explore the healing power in repetitive mark making. After giving birth in 2017, her work grew in scale, vibrance and energy. Her career was launched in 2010 with an exhibition of mixed media collages which is the medium she has been compelled to reinvestigate in 2023. She lets intuition and synchronicity take her artwork to new places while still affirming her natural style, interests and ideas.

Boyle’s use of plaster as her main means of creating texture was incorporated in 2012 and is distinct in her artworks to this day. Boyle works with layers of plaster because this process and the artworks themselves then have a sense of the primitive, giving the feel of pictograms or petroglyphs of ancient caves. She makes marks into the plaster with, various utensils, forcing her to be spontaneous as the final layer of plaster dries rapidly. It commands her from the start not to be too precious and to let the piece take on its own life.

Boyle is naturally drawn towards texture. ‘I want to touch it, experience it and know how it was created. Maybe texture affects me subliminally because the first canvases of the world were the uneven surfaces of caves, or maybe because there is always more of an element of unpredictability about it’.

Textures - Details - Mark making

The use of plaster, bright fluorescent colours, repetitive mark making and certain symbols are all trademarks of Boyle’s work. However in 2017 after giving birth to her first child her style and ideas fused together and brought to life her “Beings”, into an exhibition, titled, ‘Coming Alive’. Boyle decided to incorporate the strange characters that she would sketch after daily meditation into her artwork. Generating these, “Beings”, until 2017, was only a technique to allow Boyle to focus and free her thoughts simultaneously before starting work in her studio. Now, these odd and often distorted, “Beings”, have become a new focus of her practice. These creatures, flowing from Boyle’s mind are filled with all the same fears, passions and flaws as anybody else.  This practice is a visual journal which brings forth raw material which often reveals its meaning retrospectively once all the elements have been incorporated within the artworks.
